Opinion 90-04

Question

May a District Court judge serve on a committee, and co-chair the public safety subcommittee, established by a school district and a municipality which will evaluate the environment for youth in the community and the completeness of services provided to youth?

Answer

A judge may not accept an appointment on the youth committee as CJC Canon 5(G) states that a judge should not accept appointment to a governmental committee, commission, or other position that is concerned with issues of fact or policy on matters other than the improvement of the law, the legal system, or the administration of justice.
